Improving adherence to stress ulcer prophylaxis guidelines: a two-pronged approach 1

Poster presented at the American Medical Association Research Symposium in Dallas, Texas, November 2014. We explored mechanisms of reducing unnecessary stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) in hospitalized patients. A brief presentation of the guidelines and the evidence supporting them reduced unnecessary SUP by roughly 30%, resulting in an expected $80,000 yearly savings to the hospital. We anticipate further reductions following the initiation of an automated alert in the computerized ordering sytem.
